Sustainable Schools
Dedicated Platform
Empowering schools to drive real environmental impact through digital learning.
The Brief
Nature Connect’s Sustainable Schools programme supports schools, teachers and learners in implementing education for sustainable development. With a rapidly growing network, the organisation needed a modern platform that could register schools, host learning content, enable community engagement and ultimately scale environmental awareness and action.
The goal was clear: Develop a secure, user-friendly digital hub where schools could access sustainability resources, connect with one another and manage activities across key focus areas like biodiversity, waste, water and energy.
We were challenged to translate an ambitious education programme into a dynamic, centralised online system capable of serving multiple audiences (all on a non-profit budget that demanded long-term value and maintainability).
We designed and developed an intuitive online platform that functions like a specialised “mini-Facebook” for schools. Users sign up and gain access to lesson plans, audits, activities, events and training modules, all structured to support real-world classroom integration.
The platform accommodates teachers, learners, administrators and programme partners, each with access to the information and tools most relevant to them.
Beyond structured learning paths, the platform enables schools to connect, share experiences and collaborate. Forums, updates and a partner network turn the site into a living ecosystem of learning and support.
Clear UX and strong visual branding help ensure that even non-technical users can find what they need quickly and easily.
The system is powered by WordPress, giving the Nature Connect team full CMS control across dynamic content types, from news and events to training modules and assessments.
Integration of strong access controls ensures that some resources are public while others remain available only to registered users.
Built for a growing network, the backend was designed to scale as more schools join the movement, without compromising performance or security.
Mobile responsiveness was essential, with many users connecting through low-bandwidth environments across South Africa.
